Black diamond solitaire engagement ring? Thoughts/Opinions/Personal experiences needed?

Hello everybody! I plan on proposing to my girlfriend this summer. We’ve been talking about getting engaged and eventually married for awhile and it’s time to make that next step. So we’ve looked at rings a little bit and this one ring really caught her eye. Only thing is that it’s a black diamond! I’m clueless when it comes to jewelry so can anyone help me out and tell me if these diamonds are suitable for engagement rings? A 1 ct. black diamond was of equal value to diamonds around .25 ct. Are they inferior in quality or something? Anyways, thanks to anyone who can help me out in understanding all of this better.

Obviously if this is the one she really likes, this is the one I should probably get! I just want to make sure I’m getting her a quality ring :)

thanks again to anyone who can help :)

If she loves the ring, then get it!
Black diamonds are a good quality, but obviously not as good as your clear diamonds. Black diamonds are made black with heat. So obviously the clarity and colour are kind of shot. The quality of a black diamond is not going to be extremely high. If it were flawless or close to, they wouldn’t treat it with heat and make it black, it would be sold at its full value. It is still a diamond, and has the hardness of a diamond. There is nothing wrong with buying a black diamond as an engagement ring. I’ve seen all sorts of stones used as engagement rings.
The important part, is that she loves it and you love it. If she isn’t worried about it, then you shouldn’t be either.
I think its original, and personally, I have a soft spot for black diamonds, I think they are gorgeous.

    Congrats!

I personally love the idea of a black diamond engagement ring. It’s unique and special. Getting a black diamond makes a bigger statement, and you can get a bigger stone.

If your fiancee loves the ring, buy it for her!

The recent influx of black diamonds is a fad.
It won’t retain value or meaning as the years go on.

If she loves this fad, buy her some black diamond earrings or a necklace for another occasion.

I would not have wanted a black diamond engagement ring… or a white diamond for that matter. They’re boring. I simply do not agree with diamonds and all the crappy market ploys and such… and the fact that most of them can’t be guaranteed to be cruelty-free, and if they are you better be in Canada or with a company specializing in that kind of thing otherwise all you’ve got is a bullsh*tting salesmen and a very overpriced jewel.

However, white or black diamonds are some people’s style. My friend’s a bit more “alternative” in style, so she really didn’t want a black diamond as a fad piece. She just really… REALLY likes black. So that’s what she got- white gold and a black diamond. It goes perfectly with the white gold/onyx cross necklace she never takes off.

I preferred yellow gold and a colored stone. I got just that- a ruby.

That’s not to say I wouldn’t have said yes to something else. I was perfectly happy saying yes to nothing other than his intent and promise. :-)

Usually, the guy just kinda goes with what his girl likes. If she loves the ring, get it.

Who cares what it’s worth in cash in the long run? The idea behind marriage is being together forever… The only reason you should care about the market value of the engagement ring is if you plan to sell it… and that would be kind of strange, wouldn’t it?

Get the girl what she’ll love, and don’t worry so much. If she really loves you, she’ll say yes to a ring out of a gumball machine (note the slight over-exaggeration, as that kind of thing might be a slight moment-killer, I do not suggest this. It’s just to emphasize a point).

Okay, colored diamonds are a personal preferance….infact some colored diamonds are far more costly than white diamonds, especially yellow ones (canary), blue diamonds and the extremely rare red diamond.

The cost depends on size, color, clarity, any occulsions present and DEMAND…..if there is a lesser demand for a 1 ct black diamond of equal ‘perfection’ as a white one, then the black diamond will cost less.

It’s all about supply and demand.

I personally don’t care for black diamonds altho I do love champagne and chocolate ones, and yellow canary diamonds…if SHE really likes it, that is all that matters.

BTW my e-ring is a garnet! I love red garnets and mine has a 2.5 ct oval round brilliant cut deep red almandine garnet (my husband’s birthstone) as a center stone with 1 ct of round champagne diamonds framing the garnet…..many gals prefer colored stones or gems that hold meaning for them……your gal will be unique and NOT following all the ’sheep’ if she wears a black diamond….good luck.

If it’s what she likes, then get that one. As long as you buy it from a reputable jewelry store it will be good quality. My husband got me a blue sapphire with diamonds and I love it! It’s not the worth that’s important… it’s what it symbolizes.

Black is unsual and to be honest do you want a negative colour for such a special moment ?
I personally would say the clearer the diamond the better as it suggests purity within your relationship.

I bought my girlfriend a 1 carat diamond ring as I read that 1 carat is the most popular choice and has been used for engagments for centuries.

I bought mine on line from a diamond dealer.
